about

The Clap, a Rudolf Stenier story

As a parent and member of the Waldorf School in my community, I wanted to compose a piece that reflects my experience within the school and share my interpretation of Rudolf Stenier’s ideas. Eurythmy is a disciplined art of movement of the arms and body that visibly expresses the vowels and consonants of speech and the tones and intervals of musical melody.

The beginning of the Clap has movement patterns being called out by a teacher that are then followed by an expressive sound. It is implied that the movement requested is in fact an interpretation of the following sound. The sounds are functioning as a range of experience from the natural chicken to the comical horn; these noises are part of the spectrum of educational experience at a Waldorf school.

The second part of the composition focuses on early Steiner ideas with accompanying sounds suggesting the complexities of ideas being narrated. The final piece expresses my individual sonic tastes. A song of my choosing from the foundations of sounds before it. Like a graduating student of Stenier my previous experience informs my personal creative solution.
